TV is hard.

Mark Cuban was one of just two owners to vote against the Sonics' move to Oklahoma City. He's a total cockblocker, and his intransigence won't soon be forgotten. Money over bitches, Cuban. Here's some of his "reasoning":
"There could be information that sways me," he said. "If they come back and said the Oklahoma City index is 200 when it comes to watching the NBA on TNT or ABC, and no one in Seattle watches, then OK maybe there's information that goes beyond market size."
Well, Sports Media Watch has been gathering that information:
"In Seattle, which is undergoing its first season without an NBA team in 42 years, nationally televised NBA games are averaging a 0.8 rating on ESPN and a 0.9 on TNT, down 20% and 10% respectively from a 1.0 on each network last year."
See? Nobody in Seattle likes the NBA. At least, not anymore. David Stern is such a genius. The article continues.
"In Oklahoma City, which is in its first year as a full-time NBA city, games on ESPN are averaging a 0.9 rating, down 18% from a 1.1 in '07, while games on TNT are averaging a surprisingly low 0.6 -- down 33% from a 0.9 last year.

According to Nielsen, Oklahoma City Thunder telecasts are averaging a 1.2/2 rating and approximately 9,000 homes on KSBI (6 games), and a 1.1/2 and approximately 7,000 homes on FS Oklahoma. Sonics games averaged a 1.27 rating on FSN Northwest for the full 2007-08 season, equaling approximately 22,600 homes."
So, apparently ratings are worse for Oklahoma City's inaugural NBA season than they were for the 2007-08 Sonics' 82-game "Fuck You" to the fans of Seattle. And apparently a 1.2 rating translates into a lot more homes in Seattle than it does in Oklahoma City. Somehow this information doesn't mesh with my perception of Thunder fans as the greatest sports fans in history of both sports and fans. If only there were some prominent Oklahoman, perhaps our sportscaster-turned-mayor, who could try to explain this away to the New York Times. Oh, here we go:
“Our fan base is still really not in tune with the rest of the league and even our team on the road,” Cornett said. “I don’t get the sense that if you walked into a restaurant and our team is playing a road game, that it’s a given that they are going to be playing it on TV. The market just hasn’t matured in that respect. To them, the N.B.A. is 41 home games, and the rest will take time to develop.”
Well put, Mayor Mick. Everyone knows it will take time for Thunder fans--fans who deserved to have this basketball team more than its old fans--to figure out that half the games aren't played in Oklahoma. Naturally. Road games are a tricky concept. It's something that can only be learned through maturation and personal growth, and maybe those refrigerator magnet schedules they hand out for free. But mostly maturity. Hopefully, the fans who can figure out how to drive to the Ford Center can eventually also learn how to turn on the TV and navigate to the correct channel at the appropriate times. Maybe in year three.

Uh oh, TV's not the only thing that's hard...another week, another huge national embarrassment for Seattle...from USAToday...

"Wash. court: Sex between teachers, 18-year-olds OK

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington state law does not bar teachers from having consensual sex with 18-year-old students, an appeals court ruled Tuesday in dismissing a case against a former high school choir teacher.

A three-judge panel of the Washington Court of Appeals unanimously agreed that the case should be dismissed. While the law was written vaguely, a review of legislative history shows that lawmakers only intended to criminalize contact between teachers and 16- or 17-year-old students — not those over 18, the court said.

"The name of the statute is 'sexual misconduct with a minor,"' said Hirschfelder's attorney, Rob Hill, stressing that the state recognizes that an 18-year-old is no longer a minor."

...It looks like 18 year old girls will now have other "opportunities" for receiving A's in Seattle public schools...Seattle has also added another "perk" for recruiting high school teachers...ROFLMAO

Big Wood said...

reading comprehension is overrated.

all they said is a teacher wouldn't go to jail for having sex with an 18 year old...just like anywhere else in the country.

it says nothing about the teacher being able to keep his job.

perhaps your brain cells would be better spent trying to figure out what a thunder road game is.

It's pretty clear how Anonymous (above) got through school. As Big Wood points out, he doesn't have the reading comprehension or cognitive reasoning abilities to pass in the conventional way.

Chris Helgeson said...

Your own numbers would say that, despite the fact that Clay Bennett was giving a terrorizing "Fuck You" season to Seattle, they watched Sonics games and NBA games with more regularity. Or at least earned the same Nielsen ratings as the city who "deserved the team much more".

Seattle is a much larger city, so the same Nielsen rating would lead to a higher total number of viewers in Seattle. For people like Mark Cuban (businessmen) and Clay Bennett (bad businessman), this means more interest, more revenue from advertisements, etc.

If Oklahoma City really "deserved the team" as you outline, then one would assume (as Mark Cuban did), you would see results in the Nielsen ratings. A city that was dedicated to the NBA would watch with more regularity than a city that allegedly took their team for granted.

What we've actually seen is that the same ratio of people watch basketball in both OK City and Seattle, but Seattle has a much larger base population and thus makes more sense for an NBA franchise.

More simply put, if 1 out of every 10 people are going to watch your basketball team, would you rather be in a city with 12 million people or 1 million?

Mr Baker said...

So, what you are saying is that a market share number being the same, but used in the 14th largest media market results in more actual people watching the games than the 45th largest market in Okc-Tulsa market.

If this were a pizza, the Seattle pizza might be a 15" pizza, and Okc-Tulsa a two person 8" mini pizza. The Seattle slice would have more actual pizza in a pizza sliced 12 ways, and adding more toppings in OKC did not mean more pizza lovers?

Huh, that is not at all what you told the Oklahoma legislature when grasping for business tax credits Clay, you gave them the pizza pie in the sky vision.
It was all extra cheese and Canadian Bacon, pepperoni and black olives. But that slice is too small, that is what you told the NBA about Seattle, nobody watches or cares.

They might ask you to leave, but that's just what you would want, I think you will get the NO Shinn treatment, suck it up and stick it out.

Today, once again, Washington is a laughing stock in headlines across the nation

Headline in Ohio...

"Teachers can have sex with 18-year-old students in Washington state"

From Maryland...

"Wash. Court OKs Sex Between Teachers, 18-Year-Olds"

From Florida...

"Washington law: Sex between teacher, 18-year-old student OK"

From Oregon...

"Seattle Court: Teachers can have sex with 18-year-olds"

From Pennsylvania...

"Court: Washington state law doesn't bar teachers from having sex with 18-year-old students"

You have to admit, this is hilarious...you can't make this kind of stuff up.

"Wash. court: Sex between teachers, 18-year-olds OK

But remember that in Oklahoma, it's about sex between teachers and 18 year olds from the same immediate family. Like the song says:

"Oklahoma, where we eat with a spork.
Oklahoma, where the family trees don't fork."

Anonymous said...

"Hey Mom and Dad, I'm going to be home late from school. Mr. Johnson said that I could come by after class and earn extra credit."

Anonymous said...

What do consensual sex laws have to do with Nielson ratings?

Incidentally, teachers in WA do lose their teaching certificate regardless of age if they have a relationship with a student. The court ruling says that they cannot be incarcerated if the student is 18+. Fired, stripped of their license, but not jailed--as it is not a criminal offense for adults to have sex.

This is pretty much the law in every other state with a few exceptions. The age of consent in Oklahoma is actually 16, 14 with parental consent and it is not criminal for a teacher to have sex with an 18 year old either.

Is anyone surprised by this? Okies are a bunch of rubes. They don't even know what they are "supporting", it's no surprise they have crappy TV ratings.

Okies can find Seattle based news articles and throw them up in our faces but it's clear they are worried about what's going on with the Thunders. The Oklahoma economy is about to totally collapse. The Thunders can't sell tickets at face value. It's embarrassing.

This was a brilliant post. Keep 'em coming!

I was one of the Seattle fans that kept watching games the last year in Seattle, despite realizing that Clay was trying to make them as TERRIBLE as possible. Even though I knew that they had no chance of sticking around, I couldn't forsake the Sonics history that I had experienced over my life up to that point. It was only a few years ago that Allen missed a three that would have sent us to game seven against the Spurs... I guess that watching the crappy, Clay-led Sonics still gave me joy.

At least this blog fills some of the void during the NBA season... even when people feel the need to post material that is off-topic. It's too bad that nutjobs like Anonymous push these kind of stories into the headlines. Hasn't his mom walked into his room yet and seen that he isn't doing his homework?

Attendance figures work out to be about 1/5th of team revenue. The largest is TV advertising at roughly 50%, followed by merchandise sales 30%, with the last 20% made up by ticket sales.

So you can sell out every game and still go bankrupt. It takes advertisers to buy air time to keep you afloat. If no one is watching, no one is paying premium dollar for advertising.

"It's a race the Sonics are losing, at least according to numbers disclosed by the team. (Pro teams closely guard their finances even when asking the public to spend millions.) In 2004-05, the team had the sixth-best record in the NBA and a payroll below the league average. The result?

"We still were nowhere close to breaking even," said Sonics President Wally Walker.

In 2004-05, the Sonics' biggest revenue sources were national and local TV contracts (totaling $42.4 million), ticket sales of $28 million and a playoff stint that netted another $8 million. Total revenue of $88 million, however, was dwarfed by expenses of $115 million, according to numbers provided by the team.

KeyArena opened to rave reviews in 1995, with then-Seattle Center Director Virginia Anderson and other city officials calling it "state of the art."

The Key made enough from luxury suites and club seats to cover its debt for the first three years and even generated $2 million in income in 1996. But it lost money in 1998 during the NBA lockout, refunding $2.4 million to luxury suite owners. While it recovered in 1999, it has only seen red since."

OKC will struggle but survive with its franchise, even in winning times. When Clay and the boys, or the NBA, can't make the numbers work then the real fun begins. And yes, they are getting better but could they have gotten worse?

As far as "another huge national embarrassment for Seattle" it is an amusing story for a day, but has quickly receded in importance. Seattle leads the nation in college graduates and will figure out the right solution. OKC still needs to educate its residents that "Deliverance" is not a love story.

Student-teacher sex should always be illegal

The ongoing "Dateline" melodrama that is student-teacher sex gets another interesting chapter: A Washington court recently ruled that state law does not bar a teacher from having sex with a student who is 18.

This is obviously a rather shocking transgression of social norms -- MSNBC's grabby headline read, "Court OKs sex between teachers, 18-year-olds", as if the liberal Washington court were also handing out condoms and lube with a knowing wink...

Seattle sports in a foul economy: Stadium, arena a hard sell

Getting funds for upgrades not easy amid budget cuts

By GREG JOHNS
P-I REPORTER

It's a tough argument to counter. How can officials from Seattle and the University of Washington be in Olympia seeking money for KeyArena and Husky Stadium upgrades when the state budget is taking a beating?

Schools face cutbacks, jobs are being lost, and the economy is heading south faster than Clay Bennett with a basketball team under his arm.

So, yes, the mood in the state capital is grim this week as the 2009 legislative session gets under way.

House Speaker Frank Chopp, a man wielding considerable power in Olympia, has long opposed public financing for Sonics arena projects. And when asked recently about chances of the state allowing local tax streams to be designated this year for sports stadiums, he indicated the money might instead be needed to keep basic government services in operation.

Questioned by the Seattle P-I editorial board about the mood in Olympia facing the stadium issues, Gov. Chris Gregoire acknowledged it's not a popular topic in her neighborhood.

"I can only tell you what I've heard when I've broached the subject with legislators, which is not a lot of interest," she said."

The State is facing a 7 billion dollar deficit that is only going to get bigger.

State unemployment is topping 7%, will likely hit double digets by summer.

Washington had the biggest single monthly applications for Unemployment Insurance last month. We'll break that record this month, with money running out of that pool.

Social service programs across the Board, already teetering on the brink, are facing massive cuts in Olympia. Example: The Basic Health Care plan might kick 42% of state citizens off it's roles, leaving thousands with no health insurance.

Etc, etc, etc....

We're in the worst economic crisis in this State and the Nation since the 30's.

And what do we get? Clowns demanding money for still more stadiums?

The NBA was profitable in Seattle for 7 of the last 10 years--including 07 and 08 when Bennett tried to pull a "Major League" on the team. Check out http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/32/biz_06nba_Seattle-SuperSonics_329710.html for revinue and operating statistics.

If you go back over the history of the franchise, it turned a profit of greater than 8 mil (2008 dollars) in 85% of seasons.

The bottom line is that Bennett wanted to bring his new toy to his home town regardless of the economics. It was a poor business decision but when you mix emotions and business, it seldom works out.

Oklahoma City residents are 28 percent less likely to participate in fitness walking than average, the 2nd lowest overall participation rate among cities in our survey.

Basketball courts are practically nonexistent here, among the fewest per capita in our survey. There's just one court here for every 12,162 residents; the national average is one court per 6,909 people.

Oklahomans has gotten pretty good at winning things that get decided by votes and in other ways that can be manipulated -- the Heisman, the Big 12 Championship, an NBA team, Oklahoman of the year.

I suppose that's what you resort to when you can actually earn it on the field/court. Everyone knows Bradford didn't earn the Heisman, OU didn't earn the Big 12 Championship, and Oklahoma doesn't deserve the NBA. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure Claymate is the best Oklahoma has to offer.

There have been reports that the Celtics would like to add Joe Smith...from the Boston Globe...

"Smith doesn't want to bolt Thunder

Joe Smith would rather try to spark the Thunder than chase an elusive NBA championship ring.

There has been speculation that contending teams, including the Celtics, would be interested in Smith if he is bought out of the final year of his contract, which is paying him $4.7 million this season with Oklahoma City. However, the 6-foot-10-inch, 225-pound forward has not asked to be bought out, and the Thunder have no plans to offer him a buyout.

So, if a team would like to acquire the 14-year veteran, it would likely have to figure out a trade. The Thunder are tied with the Washington Wizards with an NBA-low eight wins, but have played better of late, winning five of nine.

"I like the young fellas and what they bring to the table," Smith said of the Thunder. "A lot of people want to chase that ring and things like that. But when you have a group of guys like this giving it their all every night, I don't get involved in stuff like that. We dug this hole together. We have to fight out of this hole together.

"I've been hearing my name, as always, all over the place. Things aren't looking bright now, but it's turning around. That's all I can ask for."
